The Tablet

This was the first book that we created in Elsi Vassdal-Ellis' Evolution of the Book senior seminar last fall. We began with a scroll, which was simply pages attached together and tied with ribbon, so I'm going to skip it.

This tablet was a modern version of the ancient wax tablet. Instead of boards, we used laminated manilla folders; instead of leather or book cloth, we used pleathr; and instead of wax, we used Yupo. Yupo allows washable marker to be scrubbed off, making it (vaguely) reusable. Unfortunately, when we were experimenting with it, we found out that although most of the marker comes off, it still leaves a stain behind.

It was quite frustrating to try to get all of the boards to line up and all of the pieces of Yupo the right size. Also, the tablet book didn't feel like a real book, since it didn't have "pages" as such. However, it was a fun and interesting experiment. I'm just not quite sure what to do with it now.

Words, words, words

Welcome to this bookbinding blog!

My name is Jennifer, and I'm an amateur bookbinder. I've taken a class last fall that introduced me to the book arts, and I am currently taking a second course to expand my knowledge and practice.

I plan to use this blog to document the books I've made and techniques I've learned, especially seeing as how I'm soon moving to Europe, I won't have access to the books themselves. I'll also be collecting ideas, pictures, videos, web sites, and links as strike my fancy.

Thanks for dropping by.
